![]() And I just can’t wait to see him again, in a different city, a different country.Israeli folk-rock musician Asaf Avidan was born in Jerusalem on March 23, 1980, and grew up in places like Jamaica and New York. I just cannot imagine him doing anything else, really! He is a funny and entertaining buddy, a generous and fascinating musician, reinventing his songs and rearranging them along the way. He tells us that he became a musician quite late, around 25. He shares stories with us and tells us about about the genesis of some of his songs. Asaf is quite a stage animal, he gives a lot more than just sound. Even alone, he manages to fill the Arles Arena with Avidan vibes. He was a sparkling, laughing, giggling, storytelling, fabulous musician. Yesterday it was different Asaf was alone on stage in Arles. The first time I went to see him I drove all the way from Marseille to Milan at the Alcazar, as the Marseille concert was booked out and I was determined to go and listen to him live. From there I listened to his previous albums too. I discovered him and instantly fell in love with his musicality and his poetry when listening to the album Different Pulses. The setting was great and he was just terrific. I went to Arles yesterday to see Asaf for the second time, and it was fab. ![]() I think to myself, truly, here is an artist who is capable of reaching everybody in the room, and not only reaching them, but moving them deeply with his tales of anguish, wonder, love, betrayal and life. A good singer-songwriter is ultimately a good storyteller, and the introduction to "Twisted Olive Branch," a story about Noah’s ark which Asaf relates to us in spoken word with sparse piano accompaniment is at once humorous, melancholic, and beautiful.Ībout two thirds of the way through Asaf’s set I look around and see several people in the audience with tears in their eyes. The songs also take on a different character, going from a stark, laid-bare fragility brought by the acoustic guitar accompaniment to a fuller, richer sound with the grand piano, although Asaf is always uncompromisingly soulful and heartfelt. Later on he moves to the piano, which he plays with an exquisite classical touch. The emotion and passion he puts into his performance has the audience totally captivated, and all of a sudden the rather spacious auditorium feels so intimate. It’s soulful, fragile, feminine, somewhere between Janis Joplin and Nina Simone.
